“That’s Andrew Lyons” wins TVNZ Award

Caleb Ryan and Rachel Woods

An artist and a friend. A life well-lived. A story worth sharing.

I’m extremely grateful to share that our documentary short film That’s Andrew Lyons has won the 1News & Current Affairs Best Documentary Award.

A huge thank you to Krsna Harilela and TVNZ for their generous words: “
What a wonderful surprise! The opening had a poetic, lyrical feel that captured you from the start... A lovely story centred around the relationship of these two delightfully eccentric old guys. [It was] a heartfelt and cleverly told story that left a lasting impression.”

To give a sense of the work behind the scenes: the edit grew to 56 timelines, 34 bins, and more than 15 hours of footage totalling over 800GB, all for a 6-minute final product. The film began as a story about an aging, humble wood sculptor from Christchurch. But a reunion with shop owner and old friend, Quade, turned a simple profile piece into something far more organic and interesting: a reflection on a life's work, philosophy, and most poignantly, the unspoken bonds of friendship.
